The Rocket Gang series represents a pivotal moment in Japanese Pokémon trading cards, introducing the first "evil" faction cards to the TCG. Released in 1997, this set broke from tradition by featuring villainous interpretations of beloved Pokémon, marking a creative turning point that expanded the game's narrative possibilities and challenged collectors to explore darker themes within the franchise. Dark Blastoise exemplifies what made this era memorable—a powerful water-type evolution reimagined through a sinister lens. The holo artwork captures the iconic turtle Pokémon with an ominous presence that contrasts sharply with its standard depictions. Collectors prize this card for its historical significance as part of the original Japanese run and its enduring appeal as a striking, unconventional take on a fan-favorite evolution line.
