Ruby & Sapphire marked a significant turning point for the Pokémon TCG in 2003, introducing the EX mechanic that fundamentally changed competitive play. These high-risk, high-reward cards with doubled prize penalties became the format's backbone for years, making the set a watershed moment between the game's earlier era and its modern competitive landscape. Collectors remember this release as both a nostalgia touchstone and a technical milestone. Mudkip, the water-type starter from the Hoenn region, represents the approachable charm that drew millions into Pokémon during the Ruby & Sapphire games. Early evolution cards like this one appeal to collectors seeking complete evolutionary lines and those who favor the Hoenn generation's particular aesthetic and cultural moment in the franchise's history.
