This promo card emerged from the Pokémon Sword & Shield illustration contest, a period when The Pokémon Company actively showcased fan-created and commissioned artwork alongside official releases. The early 2020s saw renewed collecting enthusiasm as the TCG experienced a resurgence, and special promotional cards like this became highly sought entries in Japanese markets. Contest-winner promos represent a unique intersection of official recognition and artistic celebration within the hobby. Bulbasaur, as one of Pokémon's original trio, carries particular nostalgic weight for collectors. This card's appeal lies in its custom illustration work, which differs meaningfully from standard printings. Collectors pursue contest promos for their limited nature, distinctive artwork, and the story they tell about how The Pokémon Company engaged with artistic communities during a pivotal era for the TCG.
