The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth represented Magic's ambitious foray into licensed IP in 2023, bringing Tolkien's legendarium directly into gameplay. This set proved pivotal in demonstrating how crossover sets could satisfy both dedicated Magic players and collectors drawn to the fictional universes they celebrated. Foil versions became especially sought after for their enhanced visual appeal and collectibility. Saruman's Trickery captures one of the saga's most compelling antagonists through a card that reflects his manipulative nature and command over deception. The artwork and mechanical identity resonated with collectors seeking to own pieces representing Middle Earth's complex villain alongside their Magic collections. Cards depicting named characters from the source material hold particular appeal for fans bridging multiple collecting interests.
