The Vending Machine Series from 1998 represents a fascinating chapter in early Pokémon history, particularly in Japan where the Trading Card Game was still developing its identity. These sheet-format cards were distributed through vending machines in Japanese arcades and shops, making them accessible to younger players and collectors. The green-bordered Series 3 cards are especially notable for their distinctive aesthetic and relative scarcity compared to mainstream releases, capturing a specific moment when Pokémon's distribution methods were far more localized and experimental. Retransfer appears in this quirky set alongside other Pokémon of the era, rendered in the simple but charming illustration style characteristic of these early vending releases. The novelty of acquiring cards from machines rather than traditional booster packs, combined with the limited geographic availability of this series, has made Japanese Vending cards increasingly sought after by collectors interested in the hobby's diverse roots and regional variations.
